Language disorders occur when a person has trouble understanding others (receptive language), or sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings (expressive language). Language disorders may be spoken or written and may involve the form (phonology, morphology, syntax), content (semantics), and/or use (pragmatics) of language in functional and socially appropriate ways.
Social communication disorders occur when a person has trouble with the social use of verbal and nonverbal communication. These disorders may include problems

Oral placement therapy:

Oral placement therapy is an important addition to traditional speech treatment methods for clients with placement and movement deficits. OPT is used to improve articulator awareness, placement (dissociation, grading, and direction of movement), stability, and muscle memory; all of these are necessary for the development of speech clarity.
Oral Placement Therapy is a speech therapy which utilizes a combination of:

Feeding therapy:

Feeding therapy treats children from infants to age 21 with oral motor feeding difficulties and picky eaters.

Articulation therapy:

Articulation disorder is the inability to properly form certain word sounds. A child with this speech disorder may drop, swap, distort, or add word sounds. An example of distorting a word would be saying “thith” instead of “this”.

Fluency therapy:

Fluency disorder affects the flow, speed, and rhythm of speech. Stuttering and cluttering are fluency disorders. A person with stuttering has trouble getting out a sound and may have speech that is blocked or interrupted, or may repeat part of all of a word. A person with cluttering often speaks very fast and merges words together.

OUR PROCESS:

Consultation and Assessment
Once you have completed the enrollment form, we will contact you for a consultation with one of our (professional therapists) BCBAs. This consultation involves assessing your child’s strengths and abilities as well as identifying things that challenge them.
We will spend time interacting with your child to make observations about their behaviour, communication level and skills. We may also visit your home and your child’s school to observe your child’s behaviour during typical daily activities.
Effective treatments vary for every child, therefore, specific strategies will be designed to treat your child’s needs and may be integrated into your home life.

Developing a plan
plan
Your child’s therapist will use their observations from the initial consultation to create a formal plan for therapy. This plan should align with your child’s unique needs and include concrete treatment goals and may include the following assessments; a Functional Behaviour Assessment, VB-MAPP, Essentials for Living, ABLLS, AFLS
These goals generally relate to reducing problematic or harmful behaviours, such as tantrums or self-injury, and increasing or improving communication and other skills.
The plan will also include specific strategies for caregivers, teachers and the therapist to use to achieve treatment goals. This helps to keep everyone who works with your child on the same page.
